Ace of base
I started out by cutting a large wooden plate that would be used as a solid base for the mod and then added several layers of expanding insulation foam to form the main body of the base.
The PS3 vertical stand, as well as the skull and terrarium rocks, were added gradually as I sprayed on more layers of expanding foam. Once the foam had cured, I then grabbed a knife to sculpt the foam into the shape I wanted.
Because I had used expanding foam to create the rolling base, I needed to reinforce the edges of the base. I did this by covering it in fibreglass and also adding some papier mache to toughen up the base.
It also meant I could blend things like the rocks and PS3 support stand into the base a bit better.
Once the whole base was coated in its protective layer of fibreglass and papier mache, I then began the process of sanding and further sculpting the base with a Dremel.

It was then time to spray paint the base plate with a black base coat, before adding a layer of spray glue and covering with red sand to give the mod that all-important African desert look. As soon as the glue had set the sand in place, I started positioning some more of the decorations to the base, including the Kalashnikov magazine and spent shell casings.

Finishing the base involved adding the rest of the decoration and securing things like the magazine and spent casings. The Machete is real, but was blunted for safety reasons (
We wouldn’t trust Joe with sharp things either – Ed), while the terrarium vegetation was glued on or placed into pre-cut holes to allow the whole mod to be disassembled and transported safely. The final touch was to sculpt the Ubisoft logo and add some air brushing to give the base a little more detail and a more realistic look because the red sand on its own looked a little one-dimensional.
